Common Infections
Sound like your computer?
Most malware doesn't announce itself. These are the patterns we see most often when customers walk in worried something is wrong.
Suddenly slow
Computer was fine a week ago and now everything takes 3x longer? Often a crypto-miner or background malware eating your CPU.
Pop-ups everywhere
Browser pop-ups even when you're not online, fake "virus detected" alerts, redirected searches — adware or browser hijacker.
Email got hacked
Friends say they got weird emails from you, password resets you didn't request, can't log in? Account compromise — we'll lock it down.
Ransomware / files encrypted
Files won't open, .locked or .crypto extensions, a ransom note? Bring it in — and don't pay. We assess what's recoverable.
Suspicious activity
Webcam light on randomly, mouse moving on its own, programs opening you didn't click? Could be a RAT (remote access trojan).
Fake support scam
Got a "Microsoft" pop-up telling you to call a number? You may have let them in. We check what they touched.
Antivirus disabled
Defender or your antivirus keeps turning off, can't install updates, system restore disabled — classic malware self-defense.
New programs you didn't install
Toolbars, "free PC cleaners", browser extensions you don't remember — PUPs (potentially unwanted programs) and bundled adware.
After a sketchy download
Cracked software, "free" PDF converter, random installer — pirated and bundled installers are a top infection vector.
Windows Update failing
Updates won't install, fail with strange errors? Malware often breaks Windows Update to keep itself alive.
Phone misbehaving too
Battery draining fast, weird permissions, apps you didn't install? Android malware is rarer but real — we check phones too.
Just bought it used
Used computer from Craigslist or Facebook? Smart to have it cleaned and reset before you log into anything personal.
Devices & Systems
We clean what you bring in.
Windows PCs, Macs, laptops, desktops, even some Android devices. The infection pattern changes by platform but the playbook is the same: scan, clean, harden, verify.
Windows 10 & 11
Defender bypasses, rootkits, ransomware, browser hijackers, crypto-miners.
macOS
Mac-specific adware, fake "MacKeeper", Safari hijackers, malicious profiles.
Laptops
Windows or Mac laptops — same playbook, with a focus on getting you back online fast.
Desktops & towers
Home or office desktops, custom-built PCs, business workstations.
Email accounts
Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo — locking accounts back down after compromise.
Browsers
Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox — extension audit and reset.
Android phones
Suspected mobile malware, sketchy app cleanup, factory-reset advice.
Business networks
Small-office infections that spread across multiple machines — we can audit them.
How it works
Four steps. No half-measures.
The temptation with malware is to run one scanner and call it done. We use multiple tools, check for persistence, and verify before handing it back.
Bring it in
Walk into our Elk Grove shop. Tell us what you're seeing — pop-ups, slowness, hacked email, anything weird. The more specific, the better.
In-shop scan & audit
We run multiple scanners, audit running processes, browser extensions, startup items, scheduled tasks, and registry persistence (Windows) or LaunchAgents (Mac).
Upfront quote
We tell you what we found, what it'll cost to clean, and whether a full OS reinstall is the safer call. You decide before we touch anything.
Clean, harden, verify
We remove the infection, set up protection (Webroot or your preference), patch what was vulnerable, and verify clean before you take it home.

Two paths to clean
Cleanup vs. fresh start.
Most infections we can clean in-place. A small number of cases — deeply rooted rootkits, ransomware, or compromised system files — are safer to wipe and reinstall. We'll tell you which one your situation calls for.
In-place removal
We remove the malware while keeping your files, programs, and settings intact. This is what most infections call for.
- Pop-ups, adware, browser hijackers
- Spyware, keyloggers, crypto-miners
- PUPs (potentially unwanted programs)
- Bundled installer cleanup
- Email account lockdown
- Browser extension audit
- Antivirus reinstall + setup
- Hardening — patches, settings, browser security
Wipe & reinstall
When in-place cleanup is risky — deeply embedded rootkits, ransomware, or compromised system files — a fresh OS install is the safer call.
- Ransomware infections with system damage
- Confirmed rootkit (boot-level malware)
- Tampered Windows system files
- Repeat infections from a stubborn source
- Used / inherited computer cleanup
- Business machines that handled sensitive data
If reinstall is the right call, we preserve your data first (where possible), then do a clean OS install and restore your files to a verified-clean system.
On Pricing
What virus removal actually costs.
Virus removal pricing depends on what we find. A browser hijacker we clean in a couple hours is a different job from a ransomware infection that needs a system rebuild. We can’t honestly quote either one until we’ve looked.
Every job starts with an in-shop diagnostic. After we know what we’re dealing with, we tell you the cost and the timeline. You decide whether to proceed before any work begins.
Most standard cleanups are well below the cost of buying a new computer (which is what Best Buy will often push). If a wipe-and-reinstall is the safer call, we’ll tell you and walk you through what that looks like.
