Sign out, then erase
Back up first, then switch off Find My so Activation Lock releases. The erase itself sits under Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone.

None of this needs a technician, though the Apple ID step is the one that catches people. If something will not go through, bring the phone in as it is and we will work through it with you.

1. Copy your data off
Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Backup → Back Up Now. A computer works too: plug the phone in and back it up from Finder or iTunes. Photos, contacts and messages all ride along to your next phone.

2. Sign out of Find My
Settings → your name → Find My → Find My iPhone, switch it off, enter your Apple ID password. That clears Activation Lock, and it is the one step nobody else can do for you. Ownership and status verification may be required. Activation locks must be removed before purchase.

3. Erase the phone
Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Erase All Content and Settings. Everything personal goes with it, so check the backup opened properly first. Not sure? Leave it, and we will run through it with you at the counter.

4. Charge it and pack the cable
A phone with charge in it can be tested properly, so top it up before you set off, and bring the charger if you still have it. Photo ID is preferred but not strictly required. Call (916) 627-1818 if you want to check anything else.
