Signs of a worn pack

What an aging cell actually does.

Cells fail in fairly predictable ways. Any one of these on its own is worth checking. Swelling is the one that should not wait.

The day no longer fits

Runtime shrinks a little with every cycle. The loss stays invisible for a long time, then one week the charger has to come to work with you.

Dies with charge showing

The percentage is a software estimate. The shutdown is electrical. When an aged cell cannot hold voltage as the processor draws current, the device cuts power regardless of what the gauge said a second earlier.

Runs only on mains power

A laptop that works happily on the adapter and dies the instant it is unplugged has nothing usable left in the pack. That is a cell at end of life, and no work on the charging side changes it.

Warm when it should not be

Internal resistance climbs as a cell degrades, so more of the energy going in comes back out as heat. A device that runs warm while charging or sitting idle is worth looking at.

Swelling or a lifted panel

A failing cell can generate gas inside its pouch, and the pouch has to expand somewhere: a phone back that no longer sits flat, a trackpad that has risen. Take it off the charger, power it down, get it to the shop. Swelling only goes one direction.

Falls over in cold weather

Cold raises internal resistance, and a worn cell has no margin left to absorb it. A pack that reads fine indoors and collapses the moment you step outside is close to done.

iOS flags the battery

Under Settings, then Battery, iOS reports on peak performance capability. When it starts asking for service, the measured wear has passed the point where the phone can rely on the pack. We fit new cells here.

Watches and wearables

A watch cell is tiny, so every cycle takes a proportionally larger bite out of it. Wearables tend to reach the end of their useful life well before the phone they pair with.

macOS asks for a new one

The pack keeps its own cycle count and condition, and System Settings simply passes that on. A status that has moved off normal is the cell's own measurement, not a guess.

Tablet runs out mid-film

Tablets carry large packs, so the decline is slow and then suddenly obvious: an afternoon of reading turns into one film. iPad and most Android tablet cells are replaceable here.

Charge goes nowhere

A device that sits on the charger with the percentage stuck has several possible causes: the cell, the port, the cable, or the charging circuit on the board. Testing tells them apart before anyone buys a part.

Never the same after a spill

Liquid leaves corrosion behind long after the outside has dried. Battery contacts and the protection circuit are common casualties, which is why we inspect the pack together with the board.

The process

Counter to bench and back.

Most of this happens over the counter. Ask about turnaround when you check in; it depends on the repair and parts availability.

Come by or call

The shop is on Elk Grove Blvd and you can hand the device across the counter. A call first means the part is looked up before you arrive.

We test the pack

Nothing comes apart until we have measured the cell, ruled out the port, the cable and the charging circuit, and checked the case for a pack that has begun to swell.

Quote and parts

Every repair is quoted after inspection, before any work starts. Whether the cell is already here or has to come in, you know that before you agree to anything.

Fit and verify

New pack in, seals and adhesive renewed where the design uses them, then we put it on charge and watch the curve before it goes back to you.

Cost

What a pack comes to.

Two things set the number: the cell itself, and how much of the device has to come apart to reach it. Some packs lift out on a pull tab. Others sit under the board, with the display bonded over the top. Every repair is quoted after inspection, before any work starts. Watch and AirPods Max work is priced job by job.

A pack you do not need is a pack we will not sell you. Where the evidence lands on the port, the cable or the board instead, that is what you will hear from us.

How do I know it is the battery and not something else?

The symptoms overlap. A worn port, a damaged cable and a fault in the charging circuit can all look like a dead cell from the outside. We measure the pack and test the charging path before recommending a part.

Which battery would you fit?

That depends on the device and on what is available for it. We'll explain your part options before you decide. If you want an original manufacturer cell in particular, say so at check-in and we will look into what that involves for your model.

What will it cost?

Every repair is quoted after inspection, before any work starts. Call ahead with your model if you want a figure before you make the trip.

When would it be ready?

Ask about turnaround when you check in; it depends on the repair and parts availability.

My iPhone is asking for battery service. Does that mean replace it?

That message is iOS reporting the pack's own health data back to you. It appears once measured capacity has dropped far enough that the phone can no longer draw the current it wants on demand, which is why the shutdowns start arriving well before the percentage reaches zero. Fitting a new cell resets that.

The trackpad on my MacBook is lifting. Is that the battery?

That is the usual cause. On those machines the pack sits directly beneath the trackpad, so a cell that has begun to expand has nowhere to go but up. Shut the machine down, leave it off the charger, and get it to us. A distorted cell is a fire risk and it does not settle back down.

Can you do AirPods or earbuds?

The over-ear AirPods Max comes apart and takes a new cell, so that one is a genuine repair. In-ear models are a different build entirely: AirPods, AirPods Pro and Galaxy Buds are bonded shut around a cell the size of a shirt button, and there is no route back inside that leaves them working. For those, a replacement set is the practical answer. Ask us and we will tell you which of the two you are holding.

Do you replace Apple Watch batteries?

Most models, yes. The screen lifts off the case first, and the pack sits under a ribbon that tears if you rush it, so this is bench work rather than counter work. Tell us the series and we will see what we can get for it.

What if the new battery misbehaves later?

Standard repair warranty: 30 days unless stated otherwise on your ticket.
