What Goes Wrong

Start with the symptom.

Most network complaints trace back to a short list of causes: the router, the building, a crowded channel, or the line coming in from the provider. We test to find which one before anybody buys hardware.

  1. One room never gets a signal

    Back bedrooms and garages sit behind stucco and ductwork, and one router at the front of the house cannot reach them. Placement, a second access point or a mesh node settles it.

  2. Connection drops without warning

    Connected, then not, then connected again. Could be a router running hot, a crowded channel, a corroded coax connector, or the provider's line. Each leaves different evidence.

  3. The speed you pay for never arrives

    The plan says gigabit and the test on the couch says otherwise. The ceiling is usually the router or the cabling, not the internet service. We test wired before wireless.

  4. One device refuses to join

    The phone connects, the printer disappears, the TV will not authenticate. Normally a band it cannot see, a stale adapter driver, or a security mode the device is too old to speak.

  5. New router, half configured

    You bought the hardware and the setup app got you online and no further. We name the networks, set a real admin password, add a visitor network and open ports only where needed.

  6. Mesh kit put in properly

    Eero, Orbi, Nest WiFi, Deco, ZenWiFi. These live or die on node placement, and a cable run between nodes beats a wireless hop every time.

  7. Just moved in

    New address, new service, a pile of boxes. Modem, router, nodes, printers, televisions and smart devices brought onto one network, named and written down.

  8. Wired connection for the desk

    A work machine or a gaming rig is better off on ethernet. We install and configure switches and wired gear. In-wall runs belong to a licensed low-voltage contractor, and we configure everything once the cable is in.

  9. Smart devices that keep dropping

    Bulbs, thermostats, locks, doorbells and speakers pile onto one network, and plenty of them only speak 2.4 GHz. Naming, bands and placement decide whether they stay put.

  10. Cameras need a network under them

    Ring, Nest, Wyze or a wired system all depend on upload capacity and links that hold. We build the network side so footage is not fighting everything else for room.

  11. Office network

    Shared files, printers, a visitor network kept away from the staff one, and gear that holds up when the team is on video calls.

  12. Nobody knows how it is configured

    Admin login still the one printed on the label, firmware untouched since the box was opened, one passphrase given to every visitor. We go through the settings and change what needs changing.

No brand loyalty here. What suits you depends on the size of the building, how many devices are on the network, and what you do with the connection.

  • Home routers

    Asus, TP-Link, Netgear, Linksys and the rest of what sits on the shelf at the big-box store.

  • Mesh kits

    Eero, Orbi, Google Nest WiFi, TP-Link Deco, Asus ZenWiFi, wireless or wired between the nodes.

  • Prosumer and business gear

    Ubiquiti UniFi, MikroTik and Aruba, for offices and for houses that have outgrown a consumer router.

  • Switches and PoE

    Managed and unmanaged switches, plus power over ethernet for access points and cameras.

  • Modems and provider hardware

    Cable, DSL and fiber equipment on Comcast, AT&T and the other providers here, including running your own modem instead of theirs.

  • IP cameras

    Ring, Nest, Wyze, Reolink, Amcrest and Arlo on the network side. Physical mounting is somebody else's trade.

  • Smart home hubs

    SmartThings, Hubitat, Home Assistant and Apple HomeKit, and what each of them expects the network to provide.

  • Small business setups

    Visitor traffic kept off the staff network, VLANs, VPN access and shared drives.

How A Job Runs

Find the fault, then fix it.

The router gets blamed for most of this and is often innocent. The fault can sit at the wall, in the cabling, in the device itself or with the provider.

  1. Tell us what you have

    Call the shop or come by. The layout of the place, who provides the service, what hardware is in, what keeps failing. That is usually enough to say what comes next.

  2. Survey and testing

    For coverage trouble we walk the space and measure signal and interference room by room. For a new setup we plan where the hardware goes before anybody buys it.

  3. Plan and quote

    You get a recommendation sized to the building and the budget, with labor and hardware on separate lines. Every repair is quoted after inspection, before any work starts.

  4. Install, configure, hand over

    Hardware mounted and configured, networks named, passphrases set, devices rejoined, speeds checked at the far corners. Settings and passwords written down for you.

What It Costs

Labor and hardware, quoted apart.

Scope moves the number here more than on most jobs. One router in an apartment is a small piece of work. A long single-story house with mesh nodes and a cable between them is not, and an office is different again.

Every repair is quoted after inspection, before any work starts. Labor and hardware are listed separately so you can see where the money goes. Buy the hardware yourself and we will name specific models, or we can source it. Either way the recommendation is sized to your building, not to the most expensive box on the shelf.

For an office we put the quote in writing after the survey. For a house we can usually scope it over the phone.

My internet is slow. Is that the router or the provider?
We separate the two by measuring. A laptop wired straight into the router shows what the equipment can carry, a wireless test in the same room shows what the radio side is doing, and a test against the incoming line shows what arrives at the building. Whichever number falls short names the piece to fix.
Will a mesh system fix the rooms with no signal?
Usually, as long as the nodes go where they can hear each other. A node parked in the dead spot inherits it. Where a cable can be run between nodes we prefer that, since it leaves the airtime for your devices. We measure before recommending a layout.
Which router should I buy?
It depends on the size and construction of the building, how many devices are on the network and what you do with them. A current Wi-Fi 6 mesh suits most houses here; an apartment is usually fine with one good router. We suggest specific models once we know the situation.
Do you come out to the house or the office?
Site surveys, mesh installs and office work are done at your location. Available. Call (916) 627-1818 for details. Business support is available in-shop, remote and on-site. If the trouble is one laptop or one device, bring it to the Elk Grove shop instead.
Do you run cable inside the walls?
No. Fishing cable through walls, attic work and patching drywall is licensed low-voltage work, and that is not a license we hold. We design the network, refer you to a licensed low-voltage contractor for the runs, then install and configure the switches, access points and patch panels once the cable is in.
Can you set up a separate network for customers or visitors?
Yes. A visitor network runs on its own passphrase, kept apart from your computers, printers and shared drives, and can be limited in how much of the connection it is allowed to take.
Will you get the printers on the network?
Yes, and it is a common addition to a setup. The printer gets a fixed address so it stops vanishing, then goes onto each computer that needs it.
Can you make the smart home side behave?
On the network side, yes. Many of those devices only join 2.4 GHz and get confused when both bands share one name, and cameras and hubs are steadier on their own segment. Full smart-home installation is not our trade; keeping the devices connected is.
How do I tell whether my network is set up safely?
Three things worth checking: whether the admin login is still the default printed on the router, whether the firmware has been updated since you bought it, and whether visitors land on the same network as your computers. We can go through the configuration and change what needs changing.
What does a home setup cost?
Every repair is quoted after inspection, before any work starts. Labor and hardware are quoted separately, once we know the layout and what equipment is already in place.
