Apple help without the drop-off

Most Apple trouble that is not physical comes down to software, an account or storage, and that can be worked through remotely. You stay at the machine, we go through it with you, and if the symptoms point at hardware we say so and you bring it to our Elk Grove shop.

“He took the time to inspect my Mac and explain the entire process in detail. He was very transparent, recommended the parts needed, and didn't try to upsell anything unnecessary.”

Where it usually starts

On Apple gear, it is usually the account.

An Apple ID is not just a login. Photos, mail, backups, purchases and every device you have ever signed in on hang off it, which is why one account fault turns up in six places at once and feels like six separate problems. It is normally one, and settling it settles the rest.

  1. Shut out of an Apple ID

Password no longer accepted, codes going to a number you gave up, the App Store refusing a sign-in. We go through Apple account recovery with you and fix the device settings behind it.

  2. iCloud that will not sync

Photos on one device and not the other, contacts missing, notes out of date, a backup you are no longer sure is running. Usually a sign-in problem, a storage ceiling, or a switch turned off on one device months ago.

  3. Mail that stopped sending

Apple Mail asking for the same password over and over, an outgoing server refusing, a mailbox that disappeared. Account settings, app passwords and sync rules are where this lives, which is why it is an account job rather than a Mac job.

When it is the machine

The rest of it is the Mac itself.

Storage, startup load and updates account for most of what is left over once the account is ruled out. None of it needs the Mac on our bench either, and none of it is a reason to replace a machine that is otherwise fine.

  1. A Mac that has gone sluggish

Beachballing, slow logins, fans running for no obvious reason. Usually login items, a disk with nothing left on it, or one process stuck in a loop. We look at what is actually running, and at what starts itself every time you log in.

  2. Disk space that keeps vanishing

macOS buries space in caches, old iPhone backups, mail attachments, system snapshots and duplicate photo libraries. We work out where it went and clear what is safe to clear, leaving your own files where they are.

  3. Updates, apps and new-device setup

A macOS update that stalls, an upgrade you are unsure about, software and printers to install, or a new Mac that needs your accounts, apps and files brought across from the old one.

How far it reaches

A session looks different on a Mac than on an iPhone.

Apple does not hand out the same access on every platform, so we will not pretend the session is the same on all of them. Here is what each one actually looks like from your side of the call, and where it stops being a session at all.

  1. On a Mac or MacBook

A Mac can share its screen with us while you sit in front of it, so everything on this page that is not physical is in range: accounts, storage, mail, login items, macOS updates, app and printer installs, and moving you onto a newer machine. You watch every step, and closing the connection is always yours to do.

  2. On an iPhone or iPad

iOS and iPadOS do not let anyone drive the device from somewhere else, so an iPhone session is a guided one: we stay on the call and work through Settings with you, screen by screen. That is a smaller limit than it sounds, because most iPhone and iPad trouble is Apple ID, iCloud or storage, and that part is usually settled from the account itself.

  3. Where a session stops

A cracked display, a swollen battery, a charge port that no longer holds a cable, liquid that got inside, a fault on the logic board. The symptoms normally tell us which of those it is before you set off, and then it becomes bench work rather than a session.

Not sure which of the three you are looking at? Call (916) 627-1818 and describe it. If it turns out to be bench work you can bring it to the Elk Grove shop, or send it in through mail-in repair if driving over is awkward.

When it comes in

What happens once it is on the bench.

Same shop, same technicians, same notes on your account. These are the jobs a session cannot reach, and the ones people ask about as soon as we have told them the machine needs to come in.

What you get

What a session here comes with.

  • There is a reason iGeek has such a high rating. This place is great. Don't even waste your time with Best Buy or geek squad, especially if you have an Apple device. Ryan at the desk was knowledgeable and friendly, super helpful and came off as very genuine…

  • I have been getting service from the team at iGeek for 10 years. They are extremely honest and will always do the right thing, explain options and give you a fair price lower than the Apple store. They can bring back devices others told you were not able to be saved.

Cost

You hear the number first.

Every repair is quoted after inspection, before any work starts.

If the session points at hardware, a battery, a display, a port or a logic-board fault, we stop and say so rather than keep poking at software. That part of the job happens at our Elk Grove location.

Frequently Asked

Asked at the counter, answered here.

How does a remote session actually work?
You call or send a quote request, we agree on a time, and you start a screen-sharing session from the Mac itself. You sit at the machine for the whole session and you can close the connection whenever you want.
Do I need my Apple ID password before we start?
Bring whatever you have. If you know it, the session is shorter. If you do not, that is the job, and we start from whichever route Apple still offers on your account: a trusted device, a trusted phone number, or the recovery form. What nobody can do is get past two-factor on your behalf, so you need to be at the call with any device that is still signed in.
What cannot be done remotely?
Anything physical: a cracked display, a swollen battery, a port that no longer holds a cable, liquid that got inside, a fault on the board. Symptoms usually tell us which of those we are dealing with, and then it becomes a drop-off at our Elk Grove shop or a mail-in.
My Apple ID is locked. What happens on your end?
We go through Apple's account recovery with you and clean up the device-side settings that caused the lockout: a stale trusted number, a device still signed in somewhere, verification codes landing nowhere. Parts of recovery run on Apple's own schedule and nobody can shorten those, so we also set up two-factor properly for next time.
The Mac says it is out of space and I cannot find what is using it.
Storage reporting on macOS is vague by design. Old iPhone backups, caches, mail attachments, a second photo library and system snapshots are the usual culprits. We go through them with you and remove what is safe to remove, leaving your own files where they are.
Do you handle iPhone and iPad as well, or only Mac?
Both. A large share of Apple problems are account problems, and an Apple ID fault shows up on every device signed into it. Sorting the account once normally settles the iPhone and iPad at the same time.
Is my old Mac worth keeping?
Sometimes it is not, and we will say so. But plenty of older Macs are slow because of disk space, login items or a drive on its way out, not because the machine is finished. We tell you which one you have before you spend anything on it.
