OLED panels light each pixel individually, so blacks are genuinely black and contrast holds when the phone is tilted. LCD panels use a backlight behind a liquid crystal layer, cost less to replace, and show it as grey blacks and a visible shift off axis. For a phone that shipped with OLED, an LCD replacement is a real drop in appearance and a real saving in price. Neither is the wrong answer. It depends on the phone and on how long you plan to keep it.
Symptoms worth acting on
Cracks that have reached the edge of the panel keep spreading. Touch that registers on its own, a strip that no longer responds, color that has washed out or inverted, and a black display on a phone that still rings all point at the assembly. Leaving a crack usually costs more later, because glass fragments work their way in and the digitizer goes next.
Ghost touch and what causes it
A phone that opens apps on its own, types characters you did not press, or scrolls without contact is reporting a digitizer fault rather than a software one. It shows up after a drop, after a spill, and sometimes after a poor quality replacement panel. A restore will not clear it, which is useful to know before you spend an evening trying.
