When a Reinstall Makes Sense

Does this sound like your situation?

An OS reinstall is the right move when the operating system itself is the problem — not just one bad app or driver. These are the patterns we see most.

Won't boot at all

Computer powers on but Windows or macOS won't start? Boot loop, BSOD on startup, recovery screen that won't fix it? Often a corrupted OS needs reinstall.

Crawling slow, even fresh

Clean install years ago, accumulated cruft, now everything takes forever even after virus removal? A fresh OS clears the years of leftover junk.

Post-malware cleanup

Removed a serious infection but you don't fully trust the machine? A wipe-and-reinstall is the only way to be 100% sure.

Failed Windows / macOS update

Update started, computer rebooted, now it's stuck or broken? Failed major updates often need the OS reinstalled to recover cleanly.

Upgrading the drive

Putting in a new SSD and want a fresh OS rather than cloning the old one? Smart move — clean install on new storage is the best foundation.

Switching OS

Want to put macOS on a different Mac, move from Windows 10 up to Windows 11, install Linux alongside, or wipe a used computer? We handle it.

Buying a used computer

Got a used Mac or PC from Craigslist? Recommended to wipe and reinstall before logging into anything personal.

Selling or donating

Selling your computer or giving it to family? Fresh OS install wipes all your data securely and gives the new owner a clean machine.

Want to keep your data

Worried you'll lose photos, documents, downloads, app settings? We back everything up first, then restore after the reinstall.

Random weird behavior

Things crashing for no reason, apps disappearing, settings not sticking? Sometimes the OS itself is the source — reinstall fixes it.

Apple Silicon transition

Got a new M-series Mac and want a true fresh start vs. migrating from Intel? We can set up macOS clean on Apple Silicon.

Privacy / security concern

Concerned someone may have installed something on your computer? Fresh OS install removes everything including hidden persistence.

Operating Systems

What we install.

Windows or macOS, current versions, including the tricky cases like older hardware, Apple Silicon, or BootCamp setups.

Windows 11

Current Windows on supported hardware. Includes drivers, updates, activation.

Windows 10 → 11 upgrades

Windows 10 is past end of support and no longer gets security updates, so we don't install it — we move you safely to Windows 11 instead.

macOS (current)

Tahoe (macOS 26), Sequoia, Sonoma — Intel or Apple Silicon, with proper recovery setup.

macOS (older)

Reinstalling an older macOS on Intel Macs that don't support current — we have the installers.

Apple Silicon

M1, M2, M3, M4 Mac setup. Migration assistant or true fresh install — your choice.

BootCamp (Intel Mac)

Windows-on-Intel-Mac via BootCamp, for the Intel Macs that still support it.

Linux (some distros)

Ubuntu, Mint, Pop!_OS, others — if you want to switch or dual-boot.

Chromebook recovery

Chromebook stuck or wiped? We can reinstall ChromeOS via recovery.

How it works

Four steps. Data preserved.

The fear with a reinstall is losing your stuff. We back up first, do the reinstall second, restore third — your files, photos, and settings come back.

1

Bring it in

Walk into our Elk Grove shop. Tell us what's going on and what you'd like preserved (files, photos, browser bookmarks, app settings, etc.).

2

Back up everything

Before we touch the OS, we make a full backup of your data — documents, photos, downloads, settings. Nothing gets wiped until your data is safe.

3

Fresh install + drivers

Clean OS install, latest updates, all drivers, license activation. We do this part properly so it boots fast and behaves.

4

Restore + verify

Your files restored, browser bookmarks back, key apps reinstalled. Then we run PC-Doctor hardware diagnostics on the whole machine and print the report for your records — proof that everything was tested before you take it home.

Why iGeek

Done properly vs. done in a hurry.

OS reinstalls are easy to do badly. Skipping driver installation, forgetting to back up settings, leaving update queues incomplete — all common shortcuts.

On Pricing

What an OS reinstall costs.

OS reinstall pricing depends on whether your data needs to be backed up and restored (it almost always does), how many apps need to be reinstalled, and whether the drive needs anything done before the install (replacement, repartitioning, etc.).

Standard reinstall with data preservation is a fixed-price service. We tell you the price up front so you can decide whether to proceed. If during the diagnostic we find that a reinstall isn’t actually the right fix, we’ll say so.

If you also need a fresh OS license (Windows, macOS upgrade purchase), that’s a separate line item we’ll quote up front.
